Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak spoke in front of 1200 students and faculty at the University of Central Florida in Orlando on Tuesday and said that Israel can expect a long and arduous struggle with Hamas, which will not change their ways and will continue to strive to erase Israel off the map, as well as with Iran and its puppet Syria.
“Israel will never surrender to terrorism and at the same time it extends its hand to peace, it will still hold the other hand’s finger on the trigger, always ready to protect its citizens,” Barak said. He added that at some point, and better earlier than later, it will be best to continue disengagement plans in conjunction with the completion of the security fence.
In reference to the Lebanon war, Barak said that it should have ended after a 48-hour effective air bombardment campaign. According to Barak, the war unearthed many faults in the military, the home front, and the leadership which has revealed their inexperience. However, Barak added, all those will be fixed quickly and will help prepare for the many threats Israel is facing.
In reference to the war in Iraq, Barak said that after the decisive military victory, the Americans managed to make all the possible mistakes including the disbanding of the army and the security forces of Iraq. Having said that, however, and in contrast to world opinion, history will remember favorably the leadership of Bush and Blair.
