An American diplomat said a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities would redirect Teheran’s program solely against Israel.
The official further stated that he did not believe Israel would attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, since “Israel has repeatedly stated that this is an international problem and such an attack would make it an Israeli one.”
The US does not oppose Arab countries obtaining nuclear capabilities for civilian purposes, he said, but it fears it could encourage other Arab countries to launch nuclear programs of their own.
The senior official said that even though the US sympathizes with Israel’s position regarding incessant Kassam attacks and its efforts to bring about the release of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, the country must have a diplomatic as well as a military strategy.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is slated to visit Washington next week so the US diplomat called on Israel to “decrease its activity in Gaza to a minimum.”
He also called on Israel to release Hamas parliament members unless there is evidence to “put them on trial.”
