An American campaign has discovered what Israelis and tourists have known for a long time: Jerusalem’s Old City is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Television network ABC and the national newspaper USA Today joined forces to pick their own “Seven New Wonders of the World.” The new wonders were revealed beginning on Nov. 9 for seven consecutive weekdays, going down a list chosen by a team of six experts.
The Old City of Jerusalem was to the Potala Palace in Tibet. An eighth wonder, voted by readers and viewers, will be announced on November 24.
“Jerusalem’s beauty will now reach every corner of the world,” said Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski. “This choice just confirms what we already knew – that there is no city like Jerusalem, the most beautiful and special city in the whole world.”
The team of experts said they chose the ancient city “for its central place in religious history and struggles for tolerance.”
Panelist and best-selling author Bruce Feiler (Walking the Bible) said that the sites in the Old City are considered to be among the world’s holiest places “by half of the humans alive today.”
