China has asked Israel to assist them and learn from Israel’s experience for securing the Olympic village during the 2008 Beijing Games. The request came from a member of the Chinese politburo Liu Qi during a meeting with Vice Premier Shimon Peres.

Aside from being the chairman of the Beijing Communist Party, Liu also serves as the president of the organizing committee for the Olympic Games which will be held in the city in 2008 and is considered one of the most senior officials in the Chinese regime.

Vice Premier Peres said that Israel will be willing to share information it has in the areas of security and intelligence in order to help protect the Olympic Games and make it safe for the athletes and the spectators who will be attending the venues.

Cooperation in security is not the only cooperation between Israel and China regarding the Beijing Olympics. Israel is also taking part in several bids for contracts to construct the parks in the Olympic village and the huge irrigation systems which will be built there.

Part of the meeting between Peres and Liu was dedicated to the cooperation in the area of water and agriculture technology and development. Peres suggested that China take part in a new venture to open a water technology center in Sde Boker in southern Israel. The center will facilitate 30 researchers who will focus on research projects such as reuse and recycling of water, development and improvement of desalinization technology, water management, treatment of polluted water, preventing pollution of the water table, and the use of solar energy to lower the cost of desalinization.

At the end of the meeting, Liu invited Peres to be a guest of the Chinese People at the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games as a sign of gratitude for all his efforts to advance cooperation between Israel and China and promoting peace in the world.
