Israel Defense Forces killed 22-year-old Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) Commander Abed el-Razek and a 50-year-old woman caught in the crossfire, overnight Sunday in Kabatiya, south of Jenin.
The woman took the PRC commander’s weapon and tried to run off with it. She wasn’t identified as a woman until after she was killed.
An army spokesman said Israeli forces patrolling Kabatiya had come under fire several times by Palestinian terrorists. The troops said they hit two Palestinians in one exchange of fire.
Senior PRC official Yaser Maza'al said Israel should “expect revenge in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip” in the wake of the deaths, Israel Radio reported.
The IDF also arrested 15 wanted Palestinians, belonging to terrorist factions, across Judea and Samaria overnight.
The events occurred shortly following the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians that went into effect Sunday morning. This truce was intended to stop the number of Kassam rockets from falling on the battered southern Negev town of Sderot.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert hoped the truce could apply to all Palestinian territories, but there is a great deal of skepticism. Hamas is making every effort to arm itself, which will pose a greater threat to Israeli troops.
