Jamming into Hanukkah with flavor

Getting into the holiday spirit of Hanukkah all begins by jamming with a little flavor. Bakeries have already begun to do so, replacing the traditional red cherry flavor jam filling inside the sufganiyot with everything their imagination can create.

Chef Mark Shulman of Lehem Tati bakery deserves credit for his Roquefort cheese sufganiya creation. Tati also offers an assortment of sweet fillings of strawberry jam, chocolate, halva cream and caramel.

The acclaimed Max Brenner Chocolate Bar branches surprised customers with its Moroccan sufganiyot, served with toffee, strawberry and chocolate dipping sauces.

For a slightly healthier sufganiya, the Roladin bakery chain is selling mini-sufganiyot with fillings including toffee, cream and forest berries, white chocolate, coconut cream and espresso, white chocolate, vanilla and pecan flavored whipped cream.

Yet, for these healthier delicacies, the prices are quadruple that of a regular sufganiya at nearly $2 for one.

But it’s not only bakeries who are filling up with something new. Also bagel companies like Tal Bagels, the crowded haven for bagel lovers is offering everything from strawberry to halva, chocolate and caramel for about $1.50 each.

For those who still prefer the traditional sufganiya, the Jerusalem Machane Yehuda shuk (outdoor market) is the best bet for less than ($0.50) and by far the tastiest.
