Son of slain ambassador launches student diplomatic training program

Gideon Argov, son of Ambassador Shlomo Argov who was shot in London in June 1982, arrived in Israel to participate in the Argov Student Training program at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya. Students in the program will be trained to represent the interests of Israel and the Jewish People in the international community.

The program was devised and funded by Gideon Argov and is designed to prepare gifted students with extraordinary skills to represent Israel’s interest and to become unofficial spokespersons in the international community. The plan is a continuation of the legacy of Shlomo Argov, whose assassination attempt in June 1982 by terrorists while serving as Israel’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, triggered the first Lebanon war.

The program will include 20 exceptional students in their final year of first degree studies (Bachelor’s degree) at the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy, and Strategy at the center in Herzliya.

The ceremony included ambassadors from Poland, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ethiopia, Moldova, and the Kenyan Consul General. Other attendees included Ambassador Avi Primor, head of the school for European Studies at the IDC, and Ambassador Meir Rosen, former Israeli ambassador to the US.

During his speech, Argov asked the students to imagine themselves in a relay race with his father, Shlomo Argov, passing the baton to them.

“I have no doubt that he would have been proud in each and every one of you,” Argov said. One student from Holland, Yaku Levits, promised he would guard the baton well.

Professor Amnon Rubenstein, president of the Interdisciplinary Center said “this program is an important step in dismissing the series of lies which are said about Israel around the world.”

Founding President of the IDC said, “this is a perfect example of people who take responsibility for guarding the existence of the State of Israel. This is a group of students who will strengthen Israel’s diplomatic ties.”
