Diskin: Situation in Gaza chaotic

Head of the Shin Bet Yuval Diskin (photo)said during the weekly cabinet meeting Sunday that Israel is in a bind surrounding the continuing policy of restraint in face of the Kassam attacks from Gaza, and if Israel will fire back and hit the launching cells, it is likely that the ceasefire will collapse and that Hamas will be drawn into the fire because it wouldn’t want to be left behind.

Diskin also said that despite the complicated situation, Israel must “produce and keep a military option to the situation that if we need to, we can employ it right away.”

During the meeting an argument broke out between ministers on the issue of the restraint policy. Ministers Amir Peretz, Shaul Mofaz, and Eli Yishai supported firing back at Kassam launchers. Prime Minister Olmert said, however, that the restraint policy has given Israel many accomplishments and if Israel will retaliate, it will unite all Palestinian factions against Israel.

Diskin said that since the ceasefire was announced, 50 Kassam rockets have been fired at Israel, a drop of 75 percent compared to the 240 which were fired the previous month. “The situation in Gaza is chaotic. Any unexpected incident could bring to a collapse and take everything out of control,” he added.
