A group of French intellectuals have gathered more than 1,000 signatures on a petition calling the leaders of Europe to impose major sanctions on Iran, including a ban on selling weapons, stopping investments by corporations, and an embargo on refined petrol products, in addition to added measures in the areas of energy, nuclear power, and ballistic missiles.
Heads of the group recently held a conference in Paris under the name of “Europe, the Iranian Issue, and France.” Nobel Laureate Elie Weisel was also among the participants in the conference. The conference was an initiative to have the civilian society influence the European establishment to take a tough stance on Iran.
The evening began with a statement sent by President Chirac where he called on Iran to cooperate with the international community, and if it doesn’t Iran will be “further isolated in the world.” Chirac also conveyed France’s concern regarding the unacceptable statements of the Iranian president regarding Israel’s right to exist and the denying of the Holocaust.
Chirac emphasized that the unity of the international community against Iran is imperative so the Iranian leadership could choose a way of cooperation and compliance with international agreements. The organizers of the conference called on the European ambassadors to protest the holocaust denial approach that the Iranian leadership is holding. Some of the speeches compared the Iranian threat to the Nazi threat in Europe in the 1930’s.
