Czechs fighting anti-Semitism with video clips

A popular radio station in the Czech Republic has found an original way to fight anti-Semitism, neo-Nazism, and Holocaust denial. The station produced a video clip which combines images of neo-Nazi demonstrations in Europe with archive footage of images from the holocaust, as well as an interview with a Czech Holocaust survivor all with a mix of modern electronic music.

The clip first debuted in a press conference which was organized by the center for Jewish culture and education in the Jewish Museum in Prague in cooperation with the Israeli embassy in the Czech Republic. The initiative for the project came from “Radio 1,” a Prague radio station playing alternative music for a young audience.

In 2004, the station broadcasted an interview with a Holocaust survivor who said she cannot understand youngsters who shout slogans against Jews and Gypsies without knowing anything about the Holocaust and why the police do not do anything about it.

In response to the interview, the electronic music band “Dechendos” together with “DJ Wakoroka” decided to record the song “I Cannot Understand” using the voice of the survivor. The song was at the top of the music chart of the station for several weeks.

In response to the great success of the song, the Jewish Museum in Prague decided to ask the band and a young Czech director to produce a video clip of the song, which is five minutes long, and emphasizes the connection between neo-Nazism and the Holocaust, using graphic visual language appealing to the young population.

The clip will be displayed in meetings with students, on television stations, and nightclubs. Artists will also attempt to distribute the clip through festivals specializing in video art.
