A Haifa University survey revealed that 75 percent of Jewish-Israeli high school students believe Arabs are uneducated, uncivilized, unclean and violent. Another 33 percent are afraid of Arabs.
These worrisome findings were revealed in a poll conducted by a team of researchers at the University’s Center for Research on Peace Education. Nearly 1,600 Arab and Jewish students from 22 high schools around the country participated in the research.
“We have found a serious expression of stereotypical thinking on the Jewish students’ part regarding the Arab youth,” said Professor Haggai Kupermintz, noting a vast margin of Jewish students believe Arabs are not smart.
On the other hand, only 27 percent of Arabs said Jews are uneducated. Still 40 percent of Arabs believe Jews are uncivilized, 64 percent are of the opinion that Jews are violent and 57 percent think they are unclean.
While the statistics reveal stereotypical thinking, 75 percent of Arab students expressed a willingness to meet with Jewish students while less than of the Jewish students are willing with Arabs.
