Secretary General of the International Association of Prosecutors Henk Marquart Scholtz, has announced this weekend that the executive committee of the organization has decided unanimously to grant Israel full membership in the organization.

The IAP is the first and only a non-political, non-governmental organization, amalgamating 200,000 prosecutors from all over the world. It was officially formed in 1996, and includes members from more that 120 countries including the US, Canada, Japan, Germany, China, France, and of course Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Morocco.

Among the main purposes of the organization, are to promote effective, fair, and efficient prosecution of criminals; promoting and encouraging the fight against corruption in the public sector; promote human rights protection; assist prosecutors from all over the world to fight against organized crime, all through promoting international cooperation.

The decision to join the IAP was made by State Prosecutor Eran Shendar and the management of the Ministry of Justice in response to an invitation by the Secretary General of the organization and after consulting with the legal advisor for the Foreign Ministry.

The main rationale behind joining the IAP was that such a move will help strengthen the ties between the prosecution authorities in Israel and their counterparts abroad.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Justice, “these issues take precedence especially in light of the actions Israel is taking in the fight against international crime and terrorism.” In addition, the statement said, the membership in this organization will help the professionalism and organizational knowledge of the State Prosecution.
