Livni: Israel should redefine “ultimate objective”

Foreign and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni spoke at the Herzliya conference Monday and said that Israel should redefine its “ultimate objective” which will be anchored in a constitution, headed by the law of return.

During her speech, Livni called to redefine the “basic principals for Israeli society” surrounding several agreeable principles: Israel as a home for the Jewish People; reinforcement of the confidence Israelis have in the security establishment; and the vision of two states for two peoples.

Livni said that one of the lessons learned from war was that the use of military power is not the exclusive solution.

She called to adopt a constitution which will define the rights of citizens in Israel and the standards for government operations in all aspects of life.

According to Livni, avoiding adopting a constitution so far has created uncertainty, fear, and friction between the religious and secular, Jews and Arabs, and jurisdictional problems between the different authorities, the Knesset, and the courts.

Livni also spoke about the ongoing corruption in Israel and the need to “clean house.” “There is a bad feeling which stems from failures in places where no one thought this could ever happen. Some of these places have a heavy cloud of corruption hanging over them. Alongside the failures, there is a process of repair. The police are investigating in the most sensitive places, but this is the resilience of democracy in Israel,” she said.

Livni added that “the Iranian threat and the war in Lebanon have made it clear to the world that the real threat is Iran and not Israel. Iran represents the extreme-religious threat, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not the cause of extremism.
