Knesset Committee discusses president’s removal

The Knesset House Committee was scheduled to discuss the process of removing President Moshe Katsav from office on Monday.

The meeting comes after Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz told Katsav he would indict him on charges of sexual crimes, pending the outcome of his hearing.

In order to remove Katsav from office, the Knesset must have a majority vote of 90 out of 120.

“Katsav, like any normal citizen, has the right to prove his innocence, but as president, he exploited his public position to use the media as a vessel by which to accuse the legal authorities of Israel,” said Member of Knesset Nadia Hilu.

In the next ten days, Katsav's defense attorneys Zion Amir and David Liba'i are required to appear before the committee and argue their case against forcing the president out of office.

On Thursday, the House Committee granted Katsav's request for a temporary suspension, effectively postponing Mazuz's indictment by three months.
