IDF gears up for possible military operation in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces is considering possibly extending its military operation in the Gaza Strip. Army activity similar to that of the 2002 Operation Defensive Shield in Judea and Samaria may also become necessary in Gaza.

Top military sources said the escalation of internal violence between Palestinian factions would not only lead to the death of innocent lives, but also increase anti-Israel violence, spurred by the intense fighting.

Foreign Ministry Director-General Aharon Abramovitch said, “There is no doubt we are in a difficult period.”

Abramovitch also said it is important to engage in dialogue rather than use military force. He hopes Israel and the international community will take this route.

The Israeli army and General Security Services are concerned that Hamas will resume suicide bombings or other attacks against Israel.

Hamas is accumulating Kassam rockets, with rockets ranging 15 to 16 kilometers.
