Blair: Middle East needs viable Palestinian state

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday that the Middle East needs a Palestinians state to help bring democracy and justice to the region and to guarantee the future security of the West.

Blair was to meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday. He said a "well functioning, independent and viable" Palestinian state was crucial to peace in the region and he told lawmakers he planned to tell Abbas there was a "total determination to use the new opportunity to create the chance for peace."
