Hamas leader-in-exile Khaled Mashaal told Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a meeting on Tuesday that Israel would eventually disappear from the world.
Mashaal would not give a direct answer when asked whether or not Hamas would recognize Israel, but said, “The Palestinian government insists on June 4, 1967 borders (for Israel), full Palestinian sovereignty with Jerusalem as its capital.”
Mashaal and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas brokered a deal to form a Palestinian unity government last month in Mecca, which was initiated by the Saudis. The deal has not been implemented yet.
During his time in Iran, Mashaal also extracted funds from Iran, which were to compensate for the loss of western financial aid cut off since Hamas took office.
“We still look forward to get support (from Iran) to break the political and economic sanctions,” Mashaal said.
Iran has channeled large sums of money to the PA since Hamas took office, following the PA legislative elections a year ago.
Mashaal was also scheduled to meet with Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei before leaving the country.
