Six people were killed and one was injured in a tragic car accident early on Thursday morning near Lod, between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in what is being described as one of the nation’s worst motor accidents.

Police are still investigating the crash. Initial reports led police to believe that one car failed to stop at a red light and rammed into a second car, causing multiple deaths.

“We have the eyewitness testimony of the ambulance driver who saw the accident,” Traffic Police Asst.-Cmdr. Reuven Edri told Army Radio. “We are looking into the possibility that someone may have been driving under the influence, which we do in the case of any accident. It's hard to describe this as an ‘accident.’ It’s really murder.”

The impact caused both cars to be thrown dozens of meters across the road, trapping the occupants inside. One paramedic even described it as of the worst accidents he had seen.

Most of the dead, including the driver’s twin brother, were between the ages of 30 and 40. Police are working to identify the victims.
