Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is slated to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Jerusalem on Sunday despite internal Palestinian clashes late Saturday night.
Abbas met with King Abdullah of Jordan on Saturday. The king urged him to present clear-cut goals so as to move forward with the peace process.
Olmert sees the meeting as critical and plans on discussing the continual firing of Kassam rockets into Israel and the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip through the Egyptian border.
The prime minister also hopes to discuss the release of Cpl. Gilad Shalit who was kidnapped last summer in the Gaza Strip.
Sources in the prime minister’s office said it was important to keep the channels of communication open with the PA chairman for dealing with negotiations and the return of Israel’s soldiers.
“As long as the situation with the unity government isn’t settled, we hope stances will change, and the Palestinians will accept the Quartet’s three conditions: acknowledging Israel, renouncing terror, and upholding past agreements between the two sides,” the source said.
