The cabinet approved on Sunday a bill for ultra-Orthodox private schools to receive state funding. The schools would receive funding if they meet specific criteria determined by the authorities.

The ultra-Orthodox claim that their schools are discriminated against and receive less money. The proposed bill would ensure they receive the same funds as Israeli secular schools.

During the cabinet meeting discussions became very heated and everyone voted in favor of the bill except for Education Minister Yuli Tamir.

“Haredi students are not second-class students. We need to fulfill the coalition agreement,” said Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor Eli Yishai.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the religious students have been discriminated against for years and that needs to stop.

Tamir is expected to coordinate and balance the criteria for funding with various local authorities separately, until the formal law is drafted.
