Israel held it most extensive emergency drill for civilian and military emergency response services on Tuesday despite being temporarily suspended for a real terrorist threat.
The nationwide exercise was suspended while intelligence officers, ironically, dealt with a real terrorist threat. The exercise continued as scheduled after the threat was investigated and at 2 p.m. air raid sirens wailed across Israel.
Some of the drill scenes were simply every day life in Israel. For example, in Sderot, police staged a drill of rocket barrages in the city just a day after several rockets launched from Gaza landed in the southern city. Police decided not to use sirens in Sderot, however, since they might cause panic among residents who hear the alarms every day.
Thousands of emergency workers drilled a variety of scenarios, including a "mega-terror" attack and hits by Iranian and Syrian missiles.
