Israelis are gearing up for its 46th annual Israel Festival, slated for the end of May, with opening performances by China’s Circus of Wan at the Jerusalem International Convention Center.

Festival activities and performances will span across four major Israeli cities, including Jerusalem, Holon, Haifa and Tel Aviv. Participants include Israeli theater groups, dance troupes, and musicians, as well as acts from dozens of foreign participants including Australia, Switzerland, Hungary, Uzbekistan, Germany, Austria, France, England, Holland, Russia and Spain.

Festival organizers said the program was designed to show the world as just a small global village. This is done through Tendo” a performance that integrates elements of Western modern dance with traditional African tribal dance. The choreographer is Dutch artist Christina De Shatel and the dance troupe is from Burkina Faso in Africa.

Vocal music lovers can be sure to enjoy performances by Israeli, Austrian and Italian ensembles. Especially when the Austrian choir performs with the Jerusalem Symphony, performing Mozart masterpieces: the Requiem, the Mass in D Minor and the Coronation Mass.

In a departure from previous years, organizers decided to spotlight Israeli achievements in jazz, world music and rock. Daniel Solomon, Ivri Leider, Sheila Ferber, Eran Tzur, and Shlomi Shaben will participate in a special tribute to Leonard Cohen, whose songs were translated by Kobi Meidan.

Also, as part of the festival will be the ensemble performance of the Interdepartmental Zira Theater entitled A Tower That Blossoms in the Air.” Throughout the piece, young musicians employ modern musical phrases in order to link their past to modern times.
