Syria: US efforts in Mideast are failing

Tuesday, May 01, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

Syrian leader Bashar Assad on Monday said that America's vision for a "new Middle East" is failing, as conflicts rage in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian-controlled territories.

"Results until now do not seem in favor of this project," Syria's official SANA news agency quoted Assad as telling a rally in the northern town of Deir El-Zour.

Assad went on to note that Washington's attempts to isolate Syria have likewise failed.

The Bush Administration accuses the Syrian leadership of being behind civil strife in Lebanon, a large portion of the insurgency in Iraq, and at least some of the Palestinian terrorism targeting Israelis.

In its campaign to isolate Damascus, the US has gone so far as to pressure Israel not to respond positively to ostensible peace overtures by Assad.
