Two Palestinian Arab sisters living in the Samarian town of Ramallah were recently sold by their parents to two young men previously convicted of raping minors.
The buyers, brothers aged 23 and 25, purchased the girls, who are only 12 and 13 years of age, for a total of price of approximately $5,500.
After learning of the transaction, Palestinian Authority police arrested the girls' parents.
Ramallah District Police Force commander Col. Issa Hijo told The Jerusalem Post that the absurdity of the case caught him and his men completely off guard.
"What is astonishing about this case is the fact that the two girls were sold with the approval of their mother," said Hijo. "What is even more shocking is the fact that the two men's mother argued that this was an accepted custom."
Women and girls in most of the Muslim world, including the Palestinian Authority-controlled areas, continue to be treated as inferior and, in many cases, as property. Female Muslims are also routinely murdered by their male relatives with the tacit approval of local authorities for violating Islamic dictates.
