EU ambassadors to boycott Jerusalem Day

Sunday, May 13, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

European ambassadors to Israel say they will boycott Wednesday's national celebration of the reunification of Jerusalem under Israeli rule in 1967.

The main state event marking the end of the Jordanian occupation of eastern Jerusalem is traditionally attended by foreign dignitaries. But this year is the 40th anniversary of Jerusalem's reunification, meaning the celebration is expected to attract greater international attention than usual.

With that in mind, Germany's ambassador replied to the Israeli government's invitation by saying all representatives of the European Union would boycott the festivities due to the ongoing dispute between Israel and the Palestinians over control of eastern Jerusalem, reported Army Radio.

The Palestinian Arabs have hinged peace in the region on, among other things, Israel's surrender of the eastern half of Jerusalem, including the Old City and Temple Mount.
