Israeli man killed by Palestinian rocket

An Israeli man was killed on Sunday when a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck his vehicle. The victim, a resident of the Greater Tel Aviv area, was visiting the rocket-battered southern town of Sderot at the time of the attack.

Sderot has been pounded by some 250 Palestinian rockets over the past two weeks. Two people have been killed in the attacks, and scores more have been wounded. Widespread property damage has also been reported.

Israel has responded to the attacks with limited air strikes on Hamas positions throughout Gaza, but Prime Minister Ehud Olmert insists there simply is no way to force the Palestinians to halt their fire.

The incessant barrages have forced students from Sderot to hold classes elsewhere in Israel, though that situation is temporary at best. On Sunday, the Sderot municipality asked the Education Ministry for permission to cancel the current school year.
