Norway this week became the first nation to send direct financial aid to the Hamas-controlled Palestinian government, despite the ruling Palestinian faction’s designation as a terrorist organization.
The decision to transfer $10 million to the current Palestinian leadership violated an earlier agreement among Western powers to enforce an economic embargo until Hamas recognized Israel’s right to exist and renounced the use of terrorist violence.
Hamas has consistently refused to comply with those demands, and has recently claimed credit for the bulk of the terrorist rocket attacks on southern Israel.
Norway insists that the money it contributed will not fund Hamas’ “military” operations, but rather will help to pay the wages of public servants, some of whom have gone without salaries for months.
