The Israeli army has launched a campaign to eliminate smoking within its ranks and improve the overall health of its soldiers.

A representative of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief Medical Officer told The Jerusalem Post that a group of soldiers has been trained to teach their comrades the dangers of continuing to smoke.

The campaign will also target high school students about to be enlisted in the army.

According to statistics released by the IDF, 31.6 percent of new soldiers and 41.6 percent of those ending their military service were smokers in 2006. Twenty-five percent of Israelis in general are smokers.
