Jewish leaders in Germany at the weekend warned Israel against encouraging members of their community to immigrate to the Jewish state.
The letter of warning was sent by Stephan Kramer, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office after the latter decided to authorize a government body promoting “aliyah” in the former Soviet Union to also operate in Germany.
The Nativ organization is expected to cooperate with the Jewish Agency in an effort to entice some 200,000 Jews who moved to Germany from the former Soviet Union to again pack their bags and take up residence in their ancestral homeland.
Nativ is also looking to set up shop in North America, but is currently being blocked from doing so by Israel's Foreign Ministry, which fears damaging relations with Washington and the US Jewish community, reported Ha'aretz.
