Palestinians ask Israel for weapons

Palestinian paramilitary forces loyal to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement have asked Israel to allow them to import huge quantities of weapons to the Gaza Strip.

The Fatah forces say they need the arms for their ongoing power struggle with the ruling Hamas terrorist organization, reported Ha'aretz.

The shipments would include assault rifles, ammunition, grenades, rocket-propelled grenades and armored vehicles.

Israel is reportedly considering the request. Both Jerusalem and Washington have openly declared their support for Abbas and those loyal to him in the battle with Hamas. Earlier this year, US agents traveled to the region to help train Abbas' men.
