A senior United Nations envoy charged last month that the world body has allowed itself to become the servant of US and Israeli policy.
In a private 53-page letter written to top UN officials before he retired, Peruvian diplomat Alvaro de Soto also repeated the popular libel that Washington is under the thumb of Israel and the Jews.
“US policy-makers ... cower before any hint of Israeli displeasure and pander shamelessly before Israeli-linked audiences,” Reuters quoted from his letter.
But de Soto decided to angrily give up his post as head of the UN mission in Jerusalem because he believes the world body itself has become afraid to take action contrary to the official positions of Israel and its friends in the White House.
“A premium is been put on good relations with the US and improving the UN's relationship with Israel,” he wrote.
In particular, de Soto blasted the prohibition against his talking with Syria or the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority.
Despite de Soto's charges, the fact remains that an enormously disproportionate number of UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions passed over the last 50 years have criticized Israel. Additionally, the newly-formed UN Human Rights Council in its first year convened on eight different occasions, each time with the express intent of condemning the Jewish state.
