Jerusalem gay parade gets green light

Thursday, June 14, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

Jerusalem police officials on Wednesday approved plans to hold a gay “pride” parade in the Israeli capital next week.

Authorization for the homosexual community to flaunt what most view as an offensive lifestyle on the streets of the holy city was held up over police concerns over their ability to secure the event.

Jerusalem's religious Jewish community has threatened a demonstration against the parade, and some rabbis have openly cursed those who participate.

Some 7,000 police officers are expected to secure the parade, which will take place on King David Street between Independence Park and Liberty Bell Park.

Meanwhile, the northern Israel port city of Haifa was set to host its first ever gay “pride” parade on Thursday.
