Netanyahu on Gaza: I told you so

Sunday, June 17, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday reminded the nation that he tried to warn everyone two years ago that the policies of its elected leaders would result in an Iranian-backed Taliban-like terrorist state in the Gaza Strip.

“I warned this would happen before the last elections, and my warnings were ignored. I said then that Hamastan would rise into existence, and it has done just that,” Netanyahu told Israel's Ynet news portal.

The former prime minister said the situation in Gaza today would never have come about had those in power listened to him and others voicing similar warnings prior to Israel's ill-advised “disengagement” from the volatile coastal strip in 2005.

“What we're seeing in Gaza is the inevitable result of our weak, defeatist policies and withdrawal,” said the Likud Party leader. “Every piece of land we evacuate is seized by radical Islam backed by Iran and rockets are launched from there against us.”

Netanyahu was finance minister up until the start of the Gaza withdrawal, when he resigned from Ariel Sharon's cabinet in protest.
