Palestinian terrorists operating out of Hamas-controlled Gaza fired five rockets at the southern Israel town of Sderot Wednesday evening, wounding two people and sending many others into shock.
The victims were lightly wounded by shrapnel after one of the rockets scored a direct hit on a residential neighborhood.
Another rocket plunged a nearby community into darkness after striking electricity lines.
Earlier in the day, the Palestinians fired three rockets into southern Israel. One landed in a public park in the coastal town of Ashkelon.
Israeli military aircraft destroyed two rocket launchers in northern Gaza in response to the attacks.
Israel warned following Hamas' military conquest of Gaza late last week that a resumption of rocket fire on southern Israel would result in a full-scale ground invasion of the coastal strip in order to destroy the local terrorist infrastructure. Newly-installed Defense Minister Ehud Barak is reportedly drawing up plans for just such an operation.
