Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud Party will assume power in Israel if early elections are held in the near future, according to the results of a new opinion poll.
The survey showed Likud winning 29 Knesset seats to just eight for the current ruling party, Kadima. The left-wing Labor Party would take 18 mandates under its new leader, Ehud Barak.
Prior to winning the Labor primary vote, Barak vowed to topple the government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, but he is believed to be waiting until he has a realistic chance of beating Netanyahu in the national election that would follow.
