Contrary to the international media's veiled assertions, Israel is desperately seeking for ways to avoid a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, while maintaining its own security.
Israel's Ministry of Defense is said to be considering a wide range of options for getting the necessary food supplies into Gaza, including parachuting supplies into the area or using naval vessels to drop containers of food on the shore.
The most likely option at this point seems to be the military seizure of the Karni Crossing, which lies just east of heavily populated Gaza City. If Israeli tanks and infantry were to take control of both sides of Karni, they could transfer food and other supplies to international aid organizations operating in the city.
A senior Israeli defense official who spoke to The Jerusalem Post stressed that while Israel “is not interested in a humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” such a tragedy “would not be a problem of our creation.”
He went on to say Israel fully expects the international community to do its share in aiding Gaza.
