Israel insists that a BBC employee that the broadcasting giant demanded be allowed to enter the Gaza Strip last week is in fact a member of the Hamas terrorist organization.
BBC officials pressed the Israeli defense establishment to let the man into Gaza to aid in the release of abducted correspondent Alan Johnston. The Palestinian employee is known to have close ties to senior Hamas leaders in the coastal strip.
But the BBC released a statement rejecting the idea that it employs active Hamas members.
“The BBC does not employ anyone who is a member of Hamas or any other Palestinian faction,” read the statement, which was carried by The Jerusalem Post.
