The catastrophic results of Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005 will be repeated on a much larger scale if US forces are prematurely pulled out of Iraq, warned Republican presidential frontrunner Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday.
“What happened in Gaza is a microcosm of what's going to happen in Baghdad,'' Giuliani was quoted by Ynet as saying during an address at a Maryland synagogue. ''It will become something that inflames the entire region.”
The former mayor of New York City noted that Hamas was unable to even think about militarily conquering Gaza while the Israeli army was there. A US pullout from the region would remove the last and only obstacle to radical Iran-backed Islamic forces taking over in Iraq.
At another event the same day, Giuliani said he firmly supports the Bush Administration's decision to bolster Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah movement against the rival Hamas.
