Israel does not yet share former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton's ominous view of the Iranian nuclear issue, a senior government official told The Jerusalem Post.
A day earlier, Bolton warned in an interview with the Post that “diplomacy and sanctions have failed” to prevent Iran from obtaining the necessary know-how to create nuclear weapons, and that drastic and potentially apocalyptic measures must now be taken.
“We lost four years to feckless European diplomacy,” leaving regime change or large-scale military intervention as the only viable options today, insisted Bolton.
The Israeli official responded by noting that Bolton's proactive approach is greatly admired in Israel, but that his current assessment is “too categorical” and overly pessimistic.
“We believe that the integration of concrete financial measures and UN sanctions can bring the Iranians to a tactical decision not to move forward with their nuclear program,” the official said. “Bolton's comments reflect his belief that the international community is incapable of this.”
