Not a few Iranian students were among the crowd that showed up to hear Israeli diva Rita perform last week at George Washington University in Washington, DC.
The show was put on by the Jewish Federation of Washington in conjunction with the Israeli embassy as part of a broader music and culture festival marking 60 years since Israel's rebirth as a nation-state.
Rita's performance was attended by some 1,000 people, including many Israelis, local Jews and international music lovers. But officials at the Israeli embassy were surprised to hear that many Iranians studying in the area were also drawn to hear the Iranian-born Israeli star.
Rita was born in Iran and spent her early years there before immigrating to the Jewish state with her family. Her distinctly Middle Eastern style and tones have made her a hit not only in Israel, but in many other parts of the region as well.
