Israeli forces left the Gaza Strip on Friday following a one-day operation that left 11 Hamas terrorists dead and at least 20 others wounded. Two Israeli soldiers were also wounded.
Infantry, tanks and bulldozers were sent into Gaza on Thursday in response to ongoing Palestinian rocket fire on southern Israel and mortar attacks on Gaza border crossings the international community insists Israel reopen.
The fighting centered on the Gaza City suburb of Bureij, where Hamas militants battled the Israelis with anti-tank missiles, land mines, mortar shells and heavy machine gun fire. Hamas recently came into possession of a large cache of American-supplied weapons after winning control of Gaza from the Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction.
