Israel remembers lost temples

Tuesday, July 24, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

Traffic was noticeably reduced, parking spaces were abundant and most places of entertainment were closed in Jerusalem on Tuesday morning as Israel put aside the daily grind to remember the destruction of the First and Second Temples.

The ninth day of the Hebrew calendar month of Av is also the date Jews believe other national tragedies befell their nation, such as Hitler's decision to implement the “Final Solution,” the onset of the Spanish Inquisition and the beginning of the expulsion of Jews from England.

For observant Jews, the day is one of fasting and mourning. Many Israelis pass the hours studying the Bible either at Jerusalem's Western Wall or in local synagogues, as they pray and long for the building of the Third Temple prophesied in the book of Ezekiel.
