Muslim translators as Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Center for the Printing of the Holy Koran intend to write “Israelites” out of a new Hebrew version of Islam's sacred text.
Dr. Mohammed bin Salim al Awfi, director of the King Fahd Center, told the London-based Arabic daily Asharq Al-Awsat that his work often requires adjustments to the literal translation of the text in order to remain faithful to the true meaning of the Koran and to avoid propagating narratives that “cannot be confirmed.”
One such “unconfirmed” narrative is the Koran's reference to Jews as “Israelites.”
Al Awfi's refusal to accept the Koran's confirmation that the Jews are indeed the rightful inhabitants of the biblical Land of Israel is an apparent violation of the Muslim belief that the Koran is infallible.
