US presidential hopeful Senator John McCain insisted in remarks published by The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday that Lebanon's Hizballah must be disarmed and removed as an armed threat before there can be peace and security in the area encompassing Lebanon, Syria and Israel.
“There is one bottom line: to achieve lasting peace, sooner or later, one way or another, Hizballah must be disarmed,” said McCain.
Furthermore, insisted the Arizona senator, the US and its allies must “do more to hold Syria accountable for its past and current actions in Lebanon - including its support for Hizballah which seeks Israel's destruction.”
Without elaborating, McCain said the time had come for the international community to confront Syria by applying “real pressure on the Assad regime to change its dangerous behavior in the region.”
Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama also decried Syria's support for anti-Israel and anti-US terrorist forces in the region, but recommended bilateral talks as the best way of swaying Damascus.
