US Dems won't endanger Israel with Iraq policy

The Democratic leadership in the US House of Representatives has promised to take into consideration Israel's concerns when formulating its official policy on America's involvement in Iraq.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md) told Haaretz on Wednesday that congressional Democrats are looking to make smart decisions on the Iraq situation that won't endanger Israel.

To that end, Hoyer will lead a delegation of 20 Democratic congressmen to Israel next week in order to gain a better understanding of the regional threats Israel is facing. A Republican delegation is in Israel this week for the same reason.

In March, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told a gathering in Washington, D.C. that the kind of hasty withdrawal from Iraq that many Democrats have demanded would disrupt the balance of power in the Middle East and put Israel and other moderate Arab regimes at great danger.

Experts believe that if the US pulls out of Iraq before that country is able to provide for its own defense and security, the extremist regime in neighboring Iran will move in to fill the vacuum of power.
