Women of the Bible featured on new Israeli stamps

Thursday, August 30, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

Israel's postal service featured three biblical female heroines in a new series of postal stamps introduced this month.

Moses' sister Miriam appeared on the first stamp. Another featured Esther, who was used by God to save the Jews during the time of the Persian empire. The third stamp depicted Yael, the wife of Kenite, who during the time of Deborah assassinated a leading Canaanite general and enemy of Israel.

A postal service statement carried by Israel National News noted that though ancient Israel was a patriarchal society, “women are not depicted as inferior to men, morally or intellectually.”
