Jews flocking back to Germany

Monday, September 10, 2007 |  by Staff Writer

Thousands of Jews from around the world applied for and received German citizenship in 2006, including a large number of Israelis, reported The Associated Press.

It appears 2007 will see an even greater number of applications.

The immigrants are coming from primarily from the former Soviet Union, Australia, Israel, the US and Canada. More than 4,000 Israelis received German citizenship and moved to the European nation in 2006.

A 50-year-old German law allows for German Jews driven away by the Nazis and for their descendants to automatically receive German citizenship.
