Media confirms Israel attacked Syria

Israeli and international media outlets confirmed this week that Israeli warplanes infiltrated deep into Syria last week and either bombed military targets or gathered intelligence.

London's Telegraph reported that the squadron of Israeli F-15s that penetrated all the way to the Euphrates River on Syria's eastern border attacked a shipment of Iranian arms coming across the river. The weapons were said to be en route to Lebanon's Hizballah terrorist militia, a proxy of both Iran and Syria. CNN reported the same.

The New York Times offered a slightly different version of events, reporting that the Israeli jets were on a mission to photograph possible nuclear installations that both Jerusalem and Washington believe are being supplied by North Korea. The Times, the Telegraph and CNN all based their reports on statements by unnamed officials in the US government.

Israel Channel One News' well-connected senior military correspondent reported that the Israeli Air Force (IAF) had “definitely carried out an attack” deep inside Syria last Thursday. The reporter said there were no details regarding the target, but noted that it must have been large and very important to risk having Israeli fighters downed inside enemy territory.

Meanwhile, Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari vigorously denied aspects of several of the reports that claimed Israeli ground forces had been inserted into eastern Syria in order to identify the targets for the warplanes.

Damascus sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warning that the international community's failure to censure Israel over the intrusion would “place the region as well as the peace and security of both countries in the face of uncontrollable tragedies.”
