National uproar over settler warnings

Jewish settlement leaders warned Armed Forces Chief Moshe Ya’alon last night that thousands of religious soldiers are prepared to disobey any Gaza/northern Samaria evacuation orders issued by the government. The announcement sparked a political storm in Israel, with various politicians fiercely denouncing or strongly backing the ominous statement. Ya’alon, who had asked to meet with the leaders, said he expects them to encourage their followers to obey all relevant Israeli laws. Deputy Defense Minister Ze’ev Boim said any such breakdown of army discipline could thwart the government’s withdrawal plan.
