Report: Israeli captives in Iran

A London-based Arab newspaper reported on Sunday that two Israeli soldiers abducted by Lebanon's Hizballah terrorist militia last year were transferred to Iran.

A source in the office of supreme Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told al-Sharq al-Awsat that Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were moved to Tehran shortly after being taken captive. The two were nabbed in an unprovoked cross-border Hizballah raid on July 12, 2006 that the source said was overseen by a senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander. The attack sparked the 34-day Second Lebanon War.

The newspaper reported that a deal may be in the works whereby Germany would release a jailed Iranian intelligence agent in return for the remains of the Israelis, indicating that Israeli army suspicions that the two are dead are accurate.
